HP Pavilion Power (15-cb077cl) & Windows 10 Pro & Usb type-c (3.1) Headaches and Workarounds

usb type-c headaches and workarounds

After successfully using a Blackweb BWA17HO002 usb-c to hdmi (adapter) to attach a BenQ RL2455HM (monitor) via hdmi alt mode to an HP 15-cb077cl running Windows 10 Pro (laptop) for months the monitor started returning a no hdmi signal message.  The monitor no longer showed in Device Manager.  Reconnecting the adapter, switching cables and switching monitors had no impact.  No relevant errors appeared in Event Viewer and no messages displayed in notifications when plugging and unplugging related components.  Power cycles made no difference.  Updating the BIOS made no difference.  The adapter was about to be declared dead when some magical combination of BIOS settings tinkers and a restarts suddenly brought it back to life.

A week later the screen went dead while in use.  No errors, just gone, no signal, like the adapter had been unplugged.  After an exchange of coin Amazon shipped a brand new HooToo HC-UC001 (dock) with hdmi and other ports.  Replaced the adapter with the dock led to nothing.

Naturally, every small screw securing any component blocking the back to the mother board usb type-c connection had to be removed.  Staring closely at the connector revealed no loose connection, nor shorting solder blob, nor any nearby fried circuitry.  Frustratingly replacing every component and its associated screws with clumsy shaking fingers led to the final accumulation of restoring power to the device.  One CMOS reset message and reboot later resulted in a lit up and functioning dock.  pressing.  It was dead the next morning.

Repeat instruction in the previous paragraph or seek a more efficient and less intrusive way to effectively reset the BIOS.  Shutdown windows. Depress and hold power button for 10 seconds to cycle power on and off.  Restore power button and repeatedly tap ESC until the startup menu options reveal the choice to enter bios (F10).  Press F9 to restore defaults and press F10 to save and exit.  Voila the dock lit up again!  Replacing the dock with the adapter also worked!  Not sure what is up with this laptop firmware and hardware but the workaround is good enough for now.  May have to spend time convincing HP to work on this problem or return the laptop.

tl;dr

Symptom: usb type-c port quits with no errors
Workaround: reset bios
